Carneol

The quartz carnelian is a variety of chalcedony. It had and still has a special meaning as a gemstone. The name, however, cannot be clearly identified; In Latin, “corneolus” was used in the Middle Ages, later the stone was known as “cornelius”. Older writings assume that the stone was known after the cornel because of its color. In the 18th and 19th centuries the spelling "Carniol" is often found.
